چکیده

Microstructural effects on the magnetic behavior of rf-sputtered CoFe–AgCu granular alloys are examined through the study of the in-plane remanence-to-saturation magnetization ratio, M r /M s , as a function of temperature, ferromagnetic volume content, xv , and annealing temperature. At low ferromagnetic contents (xv<0.25), the M rM s ratio in as-deposited samples tends towards 0.5 at low temperature, as expected from the uniaxial perpendicular anisotropy displayed by all samples, which is magnetoelastic in nature and arises from the axial distortion of the CoFe face-centered-cubic cells. In as-deposited samples with xv.0.25 ~well below the volume percolation threshold, xp ;0.5– 0.55), a collective magnetic behavior develops due to magnetic correlations among particles. Consequently, a domain structure perpendicular to the film plane appears, which results in a remanence breakdown: M r /M s is about 0.2. Besides, magnetic correlations prevents the thermal decay of M r /M s , which is almost constant between 5 and 300 K, even for ferromagnetic particles no more than 3 nm in size. The axial distortion disappears with annealing, the cubic symmetry is recovered, the out-of-plane magnetic structure is lost and, therefore, the M r /M s ratio at low temperature tends towards 0.8 for highly annealed samples. Consequently, the magnetic properties of granular alloys depend on the interplay between anisotropy, exchange, and dipolar interactions, which in turn depend crucially on the microstructure. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. @S0021-8979~00!00115-8#

CoFe–Cu granular alloys: From noninteracting particles to magnetic percolation

CoFe–Cu granular films with ferromagnetic content ranging from 0.10 to 0.33 by volume were prepared by radio frequency sputtering. As-cast samples were rapidly annealed at various temperatures up to 750 °C to promote the segregation of CoFe particles within the metallic matrix. Magnetic and transport properties suggested that this family of samples may be classified into three groups: ~i! below...

Giant Hall effect in superparamagnetic granular films

A comprehensive review of the giant Hall effect (GHE) is presented, with emphasis on novel experimental data obtained in Ni–SiO2 and Co–SiO2 films prepared by co-sputtering. GHE is observed close to and on both sides of the metal–insulator transition. From the point of view of microscopic conduction mechanisms, this means a crossover from metallic conductivity with weak localization to tunnelin...

INVESTIGATION ON THE EFFECTS OF MAGNETIC FIELD ON BROMIDE-INDUCED PITTING OF COMMERCIALLY PURE TITANIUM

Abstract: In chloride salt solutions, titanium alloys exhibit reasonably high pitting potentials as high as +10 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) at room temperatures. On the other hand, anodic pitting potentials are significantly lower in bromide solutions. In this study, pitting corrosion of commercially pure titanium in aqueous NaBr solution of 0.1 M concentration at room temperature was studied and the e...

Magnetic and electronic studies in the granular (Ni0.84Fe0.16)54(alumina)46 sputtered thin films

We have studied the magnetization in the granular (Ni0.84Fe0.16)54(alumina)46 alloy. The thermomagnetization curve is found to obey the Bloch law. Spin wave stiffness constant D and the exchange constant A were calculated from the experimental results. The magnetic experimental measurements have been interpreted in the framework of random magnetic anisotropy (RMA) model. The results have shown ...

Magnetite dissolution, diachronous greigite formation, and secondary magnetizations from pyrite oxidation: Unravelling complex magnetizations in Neogene marine sediments from New Zealand

Detailed rock magnetic and electron microscope analyses indicate that the magnetic signature of Neogene marine sediments from the east coast of New Zealand is dominated by the authigenic iron sulphide greigite. The greigite is present as a mixed population of stable single domain and superparamagnetic grains, which is consistent with authigenic growth from solution. This growth can result from ...
